Taking off your makeup at the end of a long day is high-key really, really annoying, but know what's worse? Sleeping with makeup on, or even residual makeup, dust, and grime that's been on your face, all day long.
The natural oil in your skin serves as a protective layer that locks in moisture. If you add makeup to the mix and leave it on overnight, the two can mix in a pore-clogging combination that increases the risk of breakouts.
So, how should you really take the day off? Start-off with a cleanser to help soften and break-down your makeup, or any dust, dirt, or grime that has been sitting on your face throughout the day. A cleanser should be massaged onto damp skin for a few minutes to really get rid of the makeup and excess sebum.
However, a cleanser alone is not enough. Following up with a good face wash is essential, it helps to further clean out your skin and prevents residual makeup from settling into the pores.
Now that your skin is thoroughly clean, it's time to bring out your toner. A toner will help neutralize your skin to a happy pH level that's neither too acidic nor alkaline.
Once you’ve removed all of your makeup, it’s important to apply a nighttime moisturizer to help replenish your skin’s natural moisture and to protect it overnight. Apply moisturizer immediately after your final toning step, while your skin is still damp — this will help lock in the moisture. Opt for a water-based moisturizer featuring aloe vera or hyaluronic acid at night for maximum, deep hydration.
